Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

CBT candidate

CBT was introduced in 1990 in an effort to reduce the accident rate among learner riders. It is not a test but a structured training course designed to introduce the novice rider to all aspects of owning and riding a motorcycle. The only requirement is that you hold a valid provisional or full car licence. If you passed your car test before February 2001 you do not need a CBT certificate to ride a moped (50cc).  Apart from that all are required to complete a CBT course before taking to the road on any machine up to 125cc. Also you must present a valid CBT certificate along with your other documents when you go for your full motorcycle test or it will be forfeit and the test fee lost.
